“To a casual observer, it is all about the medals.
I am more interested in those whose ‘mettle’ has been tested.” — Steven Lester

To fully appreciate the ever-changing – yet seemingly timeless – human drama of Olympic sports, we need search for only a few representative moments that personify the spirit of the games.

I am mystified by underdogs, scrappers and overcomers who defy the odds, deal with adversity, and make the impossible seem possible. While talent and technique are remarkable, the real contest is a test of the spirit– the divine spark– the ferocious fire that burns in the heart to be a true champion.

Champions may be larger than life, but they are never above life. And those are the stories I illustrate…. The untold and under-reported stories that fuse hard work, and the relentless determination to excel and excel again. It is the stuff of modern myth: the passing of the torch of inspiration from generation to generation. This is, after all, the transformative vision at the heart of the Olympic ideal—the celebration and exercise of body, mind, and spirit alike.
